E-learning' is derived from 'electronic learning' and refers to technology-based learning or the 'electronic' mode of delivery. Learning can be computer-based using say an interactive CD ROM, or web-based (on-line), which may in turn be via virtual classrooms or "cyber centres", or at your desk.
E-learning can provide a stand alone training solution or can be used in conjunction with face-to-face training. It is particularly successful as a reinforcer of information previously learnt and also for pre-work to ensure a minimum level of understanding before face-to-face delivery.
E-learning can be useful for passing on policy and procedure information and framing "what if" scenarios, to check understanding. The value in using E-learning lies with its flexibility. Learners can combine work and study and proceed at a different pace to one another.
Like its business counterpart, e-commerce, the possible applications for e-learning are evolving as the scope, application, and power of technologies to deliver and manage training is explored and expanded.
Video-streaming technology allows training to be transmitted to other regional centres, where presentations can be stored and accessed by learners at their convenience. Bulletin boards and chat rooms allow live discussion via the keyboard.
E-learning can open up the benefits of multimedia computer-based training and help reduce time spent away from the office in face to face sessions. Consider the secondary costs you can minimise: How much did you spend last year on flights, accommodation, food, car hire and lost productivity associated with freeing people up for training? E-learning offers the opportunity to reduce these secondary costs, whilst continuing to deliver the benefits of training.
